Art Deco architecture around the world – part 1

Art Dec architecture is one of the most recognizable styles and as we say the movement is no more, there are buildings all around the world to remind us the golden days of this type of architecture.

The start of the style is made by Josef Hoffman and Auguste Perret in the early 1900s, but as different style it developed in 1925, the year the “Exposition Internationale” took place in Paris. The movement was a mix of deferent styles and found its peak during the Great Depression in 1930.  But there are still some buildings which will always remind us of the style.

Some of the elements that belong to the style as the stylized natural motives, sometime they can be deferent kind of plants, animals and female forms made by rectangular shapes. Global influence is a main part of the style; they can be Japanese woodcut, Russian ballet and ancient traditions like the ones in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Very often, we can see many geometrical ornaments and even some dramatic architectural features.

1. The Chrysler Building, New York City

It is impossible to mention Art Deco and saying nothing about the famous building in the Big Apple.  It was designed by William Van Allen and William Reynolds and was finished in 1930. The highest of its time, it reaches 1048 feet in height.  The terraced crown top and stainless cladding made it one of the famous examples of Art Deco architecture.

2. Empire State Building, New York City

As we are in New York, we cannot forgot to mention the Empire State Building, finished just a year later in 1931, it is a symbol of New York City and it was the tallest building in the world until 1971 but as we know the height was thanks to the 222-foot antenna of the top which was added in 1950.
